Product Description

Ranch is shorter and more compact than most elderberry varieties. It gets only 5ft tall, so berries are easier to reach for harvesting. Elder shrubs prefer partial shade to full sun, with higher yields in more sun. It's best to irrigate them in summer if they are not planted within sight of a creek or pond. We like to make a honey-based syrup from dried berries to help out with the fall and winter cold season. American elderberries (Sambucus canadensis) are native to the Midwest and are more vigorous than black European elderberries (Sambucus nigra). Both are planted commercially for medicinal berries. The berries of the Oregon native blue elderberry (S. cerulea) also make wonderful medicine, and they are more drought tolerant than other varieties. Don't accidentally mistake red elderberries (S. racemosa) for any of the edible varieties - they are not safe to consume. As the old saying goes, "When you find your homestead, first plant an elderberry, then build your house."

Never ordered live plants via mail and was a little skeptical. Arrived quickly and in good condition. We’ll see how they grow.

I really appreciated the fast service and quick delivery. ITs hot in Texas they need time in the ground to survive the hot summer. Hirts gave me that time and I thank them.

Received the order very quickly. I hesitate to give five stars as that will be based on how the plant performs. Once it is established and thriving the rating will be five stars.
